At Marymount we believe that all students should have the opportunity to explore and develop their skills in an educationally rich environment that will individualize their learning experiences. However, at times students can experience difficulty in the regular classroom setting. Teachers, other school personnel, parents, or a child himself or herself may notice this difficulty when it occurs.
If a teacher or parent has concerns about a child's school performance, he or she may request assistance from the Child Study Team. The school will always consult with parents prior to initiating this process. The Child Study Team supports teachers through strategies and suggestions for students who are experiencing difficulty in the classroom. If a student's performance continues to raise concerns, the teacher may work collaboratively with the ESL teacher, Special Needs teacher, or School Psychologist to suggest and plan alternative intervention strategies to help the child meet with success. Though this is not a special education process, it is required before referring students for special needs instruction. After utilizing alternative strategies, the teacher and other involved school personnel evaluate the child's school performance and determine whether the alternative strategies are successful and should continue. Very often, many problems are resolved at this level. However, if difficulties are not resolved after a series of interventions, the school team members may suggest an evaluation to determine a student’s areas of strength and weakness. This is a formal process and could possibly result in classroom modifications and/or accommodations, an individual learning plan, specialized instruction including the assistance of a Special Needs teacher, School Psychologist, outside speech and language therapy, and/or occupational therapy. In all cases, the school personnel and parents work collaboratively to develop a program that best meets the student’s needs.

“The Learning Support Department is run by Trevor Bestall, the Director of Support. His team supports pupils with learning difficulties and other issues, in both the two Junior Schools and the Senior School, and this support takes different forms.   Pupils may receive in-class support in some of their lessons, one-to-one or small group tuition, or a combination of these, depending on level and type of need. Pupils with behavioural and emotional difficulties may also receive support from us in the form of mentoring and monitoring.

Parents of young people at the school who have more complex problems may be recommended by us to seek additional help from external specialists, such as Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists and Counsellors.

It is also possible for teachers to refer children for assessment within the school, in order to identify difficulties in more detail and define strategies for teachers and parents to support them in their learning.   Pupils identified with learning or other types of difficulty may be issued with an I.E.P (Individual Education Plan) which lists strategies for teachers and parents to use to help the pupil's learning.

While the support service at St George’s will always endeavour to include young people with a variety of needs, we also acknowledge that some young people may have difficulties at a level which may not be possible to manage adequately within the school, and in these rare cases the Principal of the school will be consulted.

Finally, Cognitive Abilities Tests (CATs) are administered by the Learning Support team. All pupils sit these tests in years 4, 7, 9 and 11. CATs help to identify young people who are possibly experiencing learning difficulties or pupils who are significantly able learners. Results of these tests are published confidentially to parents and to teaching staff.

Mr Bestall is always happy to answer questions about the services his team provides, so please email him (enquiries@stgeorge.school.it ) if you have questions of a general nature.
